Who controls the KFN?
The general meeting of the institue s members inspects the work of the director and the business manager annually, and receives regular information about the academic work being carried out of the institute. In addition, the business records of KFN were audited in 1988 and 1999 by the Lower Saxony state audit office, and this audit gave rise to no substantial objections.
The controlling body responsible for research at the KFN is the Academic Advisory Board, a body appointed by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture, and consisting of six university professors. The Academic Advisory Board examines critically the research topics selected by the KFN team. It holds regular discussions with the academic staff of the institute and advises them in their research work.
From time to time, the institute is evaluated by an international Visiting Committee, which is also appointed by the Ministry of Science and Culture. The 1993 Visiting Committee gave its unreserved recommendation that the KFN should continue its work and confirmed that, by national and international standards, it had attained an extremely high academic level, and the highest possible level in the majority of its projects.
